Chapter 1: A New Adventure Begins

Henry and Mattie are two little mice who live in a cozy cottage inside a tree stump with a very grand blue front door. They are best friends, and every day they would explore the nearby area, finding new things to discover. But one bright, sunny spring morning, Mattie looked at Henry and said, “What if we went on a big adventure today? Let's explore the forest and find some new friends!”

Henry’s whiskers twitched with excitement. “The forest is big and full of mysteries! I love exploring. Let’s go!”

So off they went scampering into the dark, shady forest. The trees were tall, and the air smelled fresh and cool. They heard the rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds. Henry and Mattie felt a little nervous but also very brave.

After a little while they came to a grassy area.  “Let’s go down there,” said Mattie, pointing to the pond that was twinkling in the sunlight.

“Great idea!” Henry cheered.

They were a bit afraid of the big birds floating on the pond but, as they approached the birds flew away, so the two little mice happily splashed around in the cool water with their tiny paws. They saw colourful butterflies flutter by and even spotted a frog sitting on a lily pad, croaking happily.

“It’s so peaceful here,” Mattie sighed, looking around with wide eyes. “But I wonder what we’ll find next!”

Chapter 2: The New Door

As Henry and Mattie walked deeper into the forest, they noticed something unusual—a door halfway up a tree.

“Wow, look at that door!” Henry squeaked. “I’ve never seen one so far from the ground! I wonder why a mouse would live up there?”

Mattie tried to climb the tree to knock on the door but couldn’t because she is afraid of heights. “I wonder who lives there?”

The two little mice decided to search the area to find who lives there. They scampered through the forest, their little paws pattering on the soft earth. Along the way, they met a squirrel who said his name was Sammy. He was very busy digging up acorns.

“Hello!” Mattie called. “We are on a big adventure and have found something unusual. Do you know who lives behind the door up that big tree over there?”

Sammy looked over to the tree and very worriedly said “Yes, that’s my house, my family lives there.”  He didn’t want the mice to climb up to disturb his baby kits and their mother. “Keep away! You can’t go up there!” Shouted Sammy, rather abruptly.

Henry and Mattie thought Sammy was very grumpy. They only wanted to make friends with him.

Sammy explained that his babies were only 3 days old and still needed special care. That is why he was being such a protective dad.

Henry and Mattie felt much happier then and became friends with Sammy. They all chattered away for a few moments excited to have made new friends.

The two little mice decided to leave Sammy to look after his family and continue their forest adventure.

Chapter 3 Where is Spiky?

Henry and Mattie scampered on into the forest and met a very sleepy badger. “Hello, what is your name?” asked Henry rather enthusiastically. “Bawson”, he sleepily replied. “And please keep your voices down, I am still recovering from my winter sleep”

Oh! Squealed Mattie. “Henry, I know why we haven’t seen Spiky recently! He has been sleeping all winter and it’s not time for him to wake up yet!  I remember now! He will only wake up again when the days are longer and warmer.

Henry and Mattie thought Bawson would be a good friend to play games with when he is more awake and said they could come back in the summer with Sammy and Spiky, when he wakes from his winter hibernation, to play their favourite game, Hopscotch.

Bawson shuffled off to find food. He was very hungry.

The two little mice said goodbye to Bawson and decided it was time to go back home as they were feeling very tired after their big adventure.

Chapter 4: The Return Home

Henry and Mattie retraced their steps, walking through the forest and back past the twinkling pond.

The forest now felt less mysterious and more like a friendly place full of new friends to make.

“We had such a fun day,” Henry said with a big smile. “We found the new door, paddled by the pond, met Sammy the squirrel and Bawson the badger!”

Mattie nodded. “I think the forest is full of magic. I’m very happy we were brave enough to explore it.”

As the sun started to set, Henry and Mattie finally returned to their cozy cottage and very sleepily climbed into their beds.

“Tomorrow, we can have another adventure,” Mattie whispered, yawning.

“Tomorrow, we’ll be even braver,” Henry said, already dreaming of new forests to explore.

And with that, the two little mice drifted off to sleep, ready for their next adventure in the magical forest.
